Export a document

iA Writer Pro for Mac lets you export a document to HTML, RTF, Microsoft Word (.docx), and PDF formats. These are useful for importing into other applications, and sharing with people unfamiliar with iA Writer Pro’s Markdown formatting.

Open iA Writer Pro

Export to HTML, Microsoft Word (.docx), PDF, or RTF:
  1. In iA Writer Pro, choose File ➤ Export….
  2. Select which document type to export to:
    • Web Page
    • Microsoft Word
    • PDF
    • Rich Text Format
  3. Click Export to export your document.

Note: Exported HTML, Microsoft Word, and RTF documents use default styles, so they’re easy to import into other apps. Exported PDF documents use the same settings as File ➤ Print Formatted (see below for more information).

PDF export options

PDF documents exported via File ➤ Export… use the same options as File ➤ Print Formatted…. To change these, use other Workflow state fonts, or print formatting syntax, use the following methods to export PDFs:

To export to formatted PDF with different options:
  1. In iA Writer Pro, choose File ➤ Print Formatted….
  2. Select options to export with, including:
    • Print header and footer: Select this to print the document name and current date & time at the top of the page, and the page number at the bottom.
  3. Click the PDF button in the bottom left, and choose one of the options to export your document as a PDF file.
To export to PDF using Note, Write, or Edit fonts and showing formatting characters:
  1. In iA Writer Pro, choose File ➤ Print….
  2. Select options to export with, including:
    • Print header and footer: Select this to print the document name and current date & time at the top of the page, and the page number at the bottom.
  3. Click the PDF button in the bottom left, and choose one of the options to export your document as a PDF file.

Note: Exporting to PDF from File ➤ Print… will print using the document’s current Workflow state font, and include any visible formatting characters.

Export as formatted text

You can copy formatted text by copying from iA Writer Pro’s Preview window. You can also set up a keyboard shortcut for creating a formatted email from the current document (for more information, see this help topic: Preview iA Writer Pro’s formatting).
